As it is known, language of communication in the globalizing world is English. English is also the language of science. For that reason, the medium of instruction is English at Atılım University. The objective of the language training program is to provide the students with sufficient language skills to follow the courses in their faculties, and to train them as productive individuals with dynamism and contemporary values for the world of science and business so as to enable them to compete not only at a national level but also worldwide.. In this context, proficiency in English Language is extremely important.
The students newly enrolled at Atılım University take the Proficiency Examination prepared by the Preparatory School and, according to the results of this exam, they either start their education in their respective faculties or, after taking the Placement Test, are placed in the group (Elementary-Intermediate-Upper Intermediate) which complies with their level of English.
The newly registered students are exempt from the Preparatory School Training on condition that they attain a score determined by Preparatory School in the TOEFL, IELTS or FCE examinations taken within the past two years.
The training is conducted through a course system, which is the most developed system in the ELT field. The academic year consists of 3 terms, each composed of 11-12 weeks. The students failing in the level repeat the failed level up to two times. Thus, progress on solid foundations is ensured.
In addition to the course system, high quality training is ensured by:
Pre-Service and In-Service training sessions and observation of the teaching sessions followed by constructive feedback by the Teacher Training Unit to familiarise instructors with new methods and techniques in ELT,
* Conducting of writing sessions by instructors specialized in this field,
* Self-Access Centre equipped with internet connected computers and various materials,
* Language Laboratories,
* Student Improvement and Counselling Centre established to contribute to the educational and social improvement of students and help them realise their potentials,
* Support courses for the students displaying low success,
* Maintaining student portfolios, preparation and presentation of term project works and holding debates,
Language training is conducted by a team of highly qualified teaching staff through the programs specially prepared for each level by use of the latest methods and techniques of ELT.
The Self-Access Centre, put into service in 2000, is equipped with computers, video players, DVD players, TV sets, a movie collection, English Learning CD sets, written materials and books and helps students reinforce what they have learnt.
Atılım University Preparatory School also offers the opportunity for those preparing for the University Entrance Exam to learn English by means of attending as an ATÜSEM student.
