Course Objectives:

• To develop an understanding of the basic principles of structural analysis and become familiar with the various methods of analyses for beams, trusses and rigid frames that are statically determinate.
• To introduce a structural analysis software to compute reactions, internal forces and deflections.

Course Topics:

• Equations of static equilibrium, stability and determinacy of structures.
• 2D (planar) and 3D (space) trusses and planar inextensible cables.
• shear and bending moment diagrams for planar frames .
• influence lines for simple beams and planar trusses subject to moving loads.
• Double integration, moment-area and conjugate-beam (geometric) methods for computing deflections.
• virtual work and Castigliano's Theorem (energy) methods for computing deflections.

Conduct of Course:

            Attendance: The course consists primarily of lectures and in-class problems. Regular attendance is necessary to maintain pace with the lectures and the progress of the class.

            Homework: Homework problems will be assigned regularly and will be due at the beginning of the next class period unless specifically stated otherwise. Late work will receive a maximum grade of 50%.

            Tests: There will be two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam. In addition, to ensure that you are keeping up with the homework assignments, unannounced pop quizzes will be given throughout the semester.

            Grading: The final grades for the course will be based on the following percentages:
