For individuals in the age of information, education delivered through traditional classroom methods may be less flexible and less effective than computer-assisted and distance learning models. Textbooks may have been a cornerstone in the educational environment for many years, but they are insufficient to foster high motivation for students in the age of information. New, rich, and interactive learning environments are needed to adequately provide students with the concrete and alternative experiences they require in the face of changing and evolving conditions. Multimedia has brought new life to the world of education. Multimedia allows for a dynamic, engaging, and motivational learning environment, rather than learning from simply reading a book. With multimedia, education is supported by animation, simulation, video, and striking visuals. As numerous recent studies in education indicate, technology now holds a key role in education systems. The use of information and communication technologies enables higher-quality teaching not only by providing multimedia richness in learning content but also by presenting learning through methods that foster discovery, excitement, and engagement, rather than passive learning, and that contribute to the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills of students. The Internet also makes it possible for students to study at their own pace, enabling lifelong learning through personalized instruction.

Today, the role of the instructor has evolved from a dominant teacher to one of a guide, a facilitator, and a coach.  Learning is no longer confined to classrooms; but continues beyond classrooms, without teachers. Consequently, the adoption of new teaching-learning techniques and effective learning environments has become a hot topic. Developing and implementing new and interactive approaches such as problem-based learning, active learning, and learning by doing and experiencing, as well as utilizing information technologies, empowers learners to become more active.

Atılım University Teaching and Learning Center (“Öğretme ve Öğrenme Merkezi”, ÖGEM) execute various studies and activities to increase success in education and the performance of educators, to ensure that students learn more effectively and permanently, and to ensure that the latest technologies needed for this purpose are in use. It is our aim to lead in its field with original projects that support innovative, constructivist, individualized, 24/7 approaches to education and lifelong learning.
