Course Objectives This course examines Turkey’s political structure within the context of its historical development. The first part of the course focuses on the reform movements of the 19th-century Ottoman period—considered the initial phase of modern Turkey’s emergence—as well as Western influence and the reactions to it. The second part covers political developments during the Young Turk, Committee of Union and Progress, and early republican eras. Finally, the political developments from the transition to a multi-party system up to the 1960 military coup are discussed. In this way, students will develop the ability to understand and analyze the actors, institutions, ideologies, and fundamental issues that form the building blocks of modern Turkish politics within a historical context.
