Course Objectives This course deals with the Ottoman legacy, the establishment of the Republic, and the political, social and economic changes experienced by the Turkish Republic in a historical pattern. It examines the main political features that have existed and evolved over time, from the establishment of Turkey to the present. It deals with the political structure of Turkey by considering the relations between social classes, strata, ethnic groups, military and civil bureaucracy. Students are expected to develop an analytical perspective on Turkey's major political issues, events, institutions and processes. The aim of the course is to provide the basic information necessary to make political analysis in Turkey. It is aimed to produce scientific approaches about the current situation by examining Turkey's recent past.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Gains knowledge about the main political issues, events, actors, institutions and processes regarding the political structure of Turkey and develops an analytical perspective.
Course Content The Ottoman modernization; The Ottoman Empire`s heritage to the Republic; Turkey`s modernization; secularism in Turkey; ethnic problems; democracy.
