Coordination and Bioinorganic Chemistry Research Laboratory (COBIRL) was established in 2008 by Prof. Dr. Şeniz Özalp-Yaman with the aim of conducting interdisciplinary research in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, and electrochemistry. It provides a dynamic research environment where a wide range of scientific projects are carried out from the design of antitumor drugs to the synthesis of energetic materials, from the investigation of antifouling dyes to the development of electro-catalysts. The laboratory also supports innovative approaches in chemical education.

Research interests:

Bioinorganic Chemistry:

  • Design and synthesis of drugs especially antitumor drugs, Interactions between DNA-metal ions; DNA-metal complexes; Protein and metal complexes
  • Design and synthesis of biologically active metal complexesCoordination Chemistry:
  • Antifouling dyes
  • Energetic Materials, primary explosives, propellants.
  • Synthesis, electronic structure and electronic absorption spectrum of metal complexes

Electrochemistry

  • Electrochemical behavior of metal complexes
  • Bioelectrochemistry: Investigation of binding ability of the complexes on DNA by electrochemical methods
  • Spectroelectrochemistry: Combination of the spectroscopic and electrochemical methods.
  • Cathode or Anode catalyzers for PEM Fuel Cells
  • Inorganic Polymers:
  • Polymers of some Schiff base containing metals
  • Chemistry Education:
  • New teaching methods and computer based testing
