What is co-operative education (COOP)?

COOP is an educational model that combines university education with professional work experience, aiming to train individuals who possess not only academic knowledge but also practical industry experience. Students participating in cooperative education continue their studies by working at one of our partner companies/institutions during their second summer internship and the following fall semester (Internship + 7th semester). During this period, students are not required to attend university physically, provided that they fulfill the requirements of their compulsory 4th-year courses.

Which courses are registered in COOP and how are they graded?

Students participating in COOP register for six courses in total: Summer Internship II, Aerospace Engineering Design, 2 General Courses, and 2 Area Elective Courses (total 6 courses). Course grades are calculated based on reports submitted by students during the cooperative education period, presentations delivered at the end of the semester, evaluations made by the company/institution. Throughout this process, students are supervised by a faculty member assigned by the department.

Which companies have COOP agreements with our department?

The list of companies/institutions that have agreements with our department can be accessed through this link.

What are the application requirements for COOP?

Participation in cooperative education is optional and not compulsory. Application and participation requirements can be found in the Cooperative Education Directive.

When and where to apply for COOP?

Applications for cooperative education are submitted each year at the beginning of the spring semester to the Career Planning and Cooperative Education Coordination Office. It is important to follow the related announcements carefully.

How is the company for COOP determined?

The CVs of applicant students are shared with companies that will accept cooperative education students. Companies conduct interviews with selected students, and following these interviews, placements are determined based on mutual preference.

Course planning suggestions for students considering joining COOP:

Students planning to participate in cooperative education are required to complete ASE399 before the cooperative education period in order to be eligible to take ASE401 and ASE499.

It is recommended that students complete TURK401, which is a 7th semester course, before the cooperative education period.

It is also recommended that students leave two general courses, and two area elective courses for the cooperative education semester rather than completing them earlier.

Which courses should students participating in COOP register for?

  • ASE491 Cooperative Education Project I (Area Elective)
  • ASE492 Cooperative Education Project II (Area Elective)
  • ASE405 Cooperative Education Practice III (General Course)
  • ASE407 Cooperative Education Practice VI (General Course)
  • ASE401 Aerospace Engineering Design (Register for Section 33)
  • ASE499 Summer Internship II
