Course Objectives The way how architecture and art interprete political images for propaganda purposes is examined and it is aimed to understand its influence on mass culture. The connection of art as a tool of propaganda with social change is scrutinized. The strength of art and architecture in transformation into a tool for broadcasting thoughts by being used for different ideologies, power and state propaganda is presented. It is aimed that consciousness will be gained about its function in creating a society of consumption and spreading the target ethical values. The concept of megalotrophie is discussed and its development throughout history and its influence on cities are compared.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • At the end of the course, student: 1- Analyses the influence of art and architecture on mass culture through images. 2- Forms a critical viewpoint about how art and architecture were used as tools of propaganda in the course of history. 3- Examines the relation of art and architecture as tools of propaganda with social change. 4- Recognizes the force of art and architecture in transformation into a tool for broadcasting thoughts by being used for different ideologies, power and state propaganda. 5- Gains consciousness about its function in creating a consumption society and spreading the aimed ethical values.
Course Content Use of architecture as means of propaganda for different belief systems, aims and ideologies since Antiquity; theoretical knowledge and examples related with the subject; relation of architecture, art, and politics; study of the impact on mass culture through examples of painting, graphic arts, photography, film, sculpture, etc., besides the images created in architectural works.
