Last week the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) Systems Concepts and Integration (SCI) Panel in collaboration with the @Von Karman Institute of Fluid Dynamics held a Lecture Series on “Store Separation and Trajectory Prediction” to bring together individuals working in several independent disciplines to discuss ways the store separation process might be improved.
Store separation is the process that any new aircraft/weapon combination has to undergo before a flight clearance is issued. This can be accomplished using previous data from existing aircraft and weapons since new aircraft and/or weapons, both internal and external, require extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), wind tunnel, ground and flight testing.
Over 100 participants from the military, academia, and industry attended the 3-day event that covered a broad spectrum of subjects including both experimental and computational aspects of store separation related to its aerodynamics, performance and flying qualities, structures, stability and control as well as flutter and dynamical problems.
