Course Objectives The aim of ENG201course is to help the students to further improve their academic reading and writing skills. The students who have successfully completed this course are expected to be Independent Users in level B2* according to Common European Framework of Reference.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • • understand and practise different reading strategies, • find out the purpose and identify the main idea(s) of a text, • identify the details that support the main idea(s), • make connections between ideas, • infer information which is not clearly given in a text, • evaluate the author’s thesis in a critical way and come up with arguments for and against it,
  • write a well-organized argumentative essay that includes; • an introductory paragraph that reviews the topic in a general way, states its significance and represents the thesis statement clearly and concisely, • body paragraphs that support the thesis statement with sound reasoning and adequate support, • a concluding paragraph that restates the thesis statement, reviews the main points and presents an inspiring comment, • clear and logical transitions between the ideas/paragraphs, • demonstrate structural and lexical variety and level-appropriate word choice.
  • • watch lecture videos on Moodle, • watch unit videos of their course books, • develop their note-taking skills.
  • • take a stand in classroom discussions on a given topic and state their ideas clearly and strongly with sufficient support, • contribute to the class discussions and activities using their impressions about the contents of the videos on Moodle.
  • • do and submit the assigned online tasks using technology and become independent learners.
Course Content Advanced reading and writing skills, applying critical reading skills and strategies, identifying the organization of a reading text, main ideas of the texts, and the author?s main purpose, summarizing a given text, outlining and writing an argumentative essay.
