| Course Objectives | The KAM 516 Art and Politics elective graduate course examines how state authority or political elites symbolically construct and maintain their power, or how anti-establishment political ideologies and movements that criticize/protest political authority dismantle this same symbolic discourse, particularly through visual art works. This examination also takes into account a general assessment of the social and cultural conditions from which these artworks emerged. Furthermore, the artworks examined are not limited to a specific culture, period, or works considered classical; more modern artistic styles, such as caricature, one of the most important representatives of political satire, are also included in the discussion. In this sense, the course concentrates on specific artworks rather than textual analysis and discussion. |
