Course Objectives This course aims to provide undergraduate audiology students with a comprehensive understanding of the neuroscientific foundations of auditory perception, central auditory processing, and functional hearing. The course focuses on explaining listening difficulties that occur despite normal peripheral hearing, emphasizing sound localization, speech perception in noise, central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), and electrophysiological assessment methods. Students are expected to develop clinical reasoning skills for evaluating functional listening abilities in real-life environments.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Explain the neuroscientific foundations of auditory perception and the central organization of the auditory system.
  • Describe the role of psychoacoustic processes, including temporal processing and binaural hearing, in functional listening.
  • Define the concept of functional hearing and distinguish it from peripheral hearing based on real-life listening demands.
  • Explain the basic characteristics and clinical implications of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD).
  • Differentiate assessment approaches used to evaluate functional listening abilities such as sound localization and speech perception in noise.
  • Relate behavioral and electrophysiological assessment methods to the central auditory processes they represent.
  • Select appropriate evaluation strategies for individuals with functional listening difficulties using clinical reasoning.
  • Interpret assessment findings in terms of real-life listening performance and functional hearing outcomes.
Course Content Introduction to auditory neuroscience and functional hearing; psychoacoustic foundations of auditory perception; temporal processing and speech understanding; binaural hearing and sound localization; evaluation of sound localization; speech perception in noise and its assessment; central auditory processing disorder; behavioral evaluation of central auditory processes; electrophysiological assessment of central auditory processing; case-based integration and clinical discussion.
