Course Objectives The course aims to enable the students to get the necessary skills for sight translation. Furthermore, it targets that the students to be fluent speakers of both languages, to focus on the message rather than the structure, to get used to different kinds of texts including speeches or informative documentary ones and to convey the message in an active way. This course covers the basic theory and techniques which are required to perform reading out a text (written in a different source language ) in a target language accurately and fluently. During the course, students learn and practise reading out loud techniques such as breathing, pauses, pronunciation, enunciation. The course also assists students in the development of skills required for sight translation such as reading comprehension, scanning for main ideas, fast reading, analysis of language, vocabulary enrichment, and paraphrasing. This course not only provides practice in sight translation but also provides the background on consecutive and simultaneous interpretation courses.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • To learn the importance of terminological and conceptual issues of texts to be translated
  • To be able to acquire the basic outline of the skills for sight interpreting such as oral paraphrasing including expanding and condensing, parsing and chunking along with memory exercises.
  • To be able to acquire basic skills in relation to effective reading and analyzing source text structure
  • To be able to apply basic skills in relation to effective reading and analyzing source text structure during interpretation
  • To be able to use terminology during interpretation of a variety of texts on different fields both in English and Turkish
  • To be able to develop an awareness and skiils in order to find solutions for the problems confronted while interpreting
Course Content Basic sight translation skills; exercises with paraphrasing, chunking; good speaking skills; exercises with complex sight translation texts.
