Course Objectives This course aims to introduce basic interpreting skills from English to Turkish and vice versa to students. Students learn basic consecutive and simultaneous interpreting strategies. Consecutive and on-sight interpreting of short speeches from both languages is the main activity of the course. Students are introduced to various subjects through the use of several materials, such as bilingual speeches taken from various magazines, excerpts from meetings obtained on internet, proceedings from international conferences. In this way, students learn to listen actively in order to relay the message of the speech; hence they have the opportunity to improve their interpreting skills.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Students enhance and improve memory and retention, and note-taking skills.
  • Students learn fundamental interpreting strategies that can be used to overcome difficulties during consecutive interpreting.
  • Students learn how to apply different types of interpreting in real life.
  • Students learn how to manage their stress during simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting and to apply interpreting strategies.
  • Students improve their communicative skills.
Course Content Fundamental interpreting skills; active listening and note-taking skills; consecutive and on-sight interpreting exercises; memory and retention skills, etc.
