Course Objectives The course aims to introduce students the emergence of art with the prehistoric period, its meaning, importance and stages and to teach the concepts and terms of art by classifying the periods chronologically. Students' awareness on the interactions between the natural environment, technology, religion, socio-economic structure and civilizations during the development of art are intended to be developed.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Describes the artistic developments in the past cultures and civilizations.
  • Comprehends that technological development offers new dimensions and opportunities in the use of materials.
  • Describes the socio-cultural structures of the societies from the point of Art History.
  • Describes the artistic periods in Anatolia and Europe; developments and interactions in architecture, sculpture and painting.
  • Distinguishes, analyzes and synthesizes the styles and cultural differences in various works of art.
Course Content During the course, the art of the civilizations from man’s first emergence to the present day, the phases they have undergone and art styles are discussed; relationship and interactions between natural environment, socio-economic structure, political and social order, technology, religion and civilizations in the development of art are examined. Prehistoric, Protohistoric, Early History and Historical Periods, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Roman works of art are introduced, Roman Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, 19th and 20th century etc. styles are studied with examples.
