Course Objectives The course aims to enable students to understand the essence of interpreting as well as to acquire the necessary skills for interpreting from English into Turkish and vice versa. In this context, it equips students with good listening and comprehension methods such as active listening, analytical thinking and paraphrasing which are required for consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. Paraphrasing the speeches orally in English and Turkish is the main activity of this course because it forms the basis of both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting courses.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Students have become familiar with types of interpreting and the profession of conference interpreting.
  • Students developed memory and retention skills.
  • Students developed their listening and comprehension skills.
  • Students acquired the basic interpreting skills necessary for consecutive interpreting.
  • Students learned how to convey the message of a speech either through paraphrase or consecutive interpreting.
  • Students familiarized with various uses of language such as economics, law, international relations, etc. in speeches and enhanced their terminology knowledge.
Course Content Basic interpreting skills; active listening skills; paraphrasing, memory and retention skills, etc.; short consecutive interpreting exercises.
