Course Objectives Gain the knowledge, skills and attitude for comprehending both psychological health and psychiatric disorders; diagnosis and treatment of depression and the emergency psychiatric cases, recognizing the psychiatric presentations due to the general medical conditions, awareness about the alcohol and substance use which is important for the public health.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Explain the concept of mental health and evaluate the patient as biopsychosocially in a holistic manner.
  • Take the patient’s psychiatric history composed of their main complaint, background, history, and medical diseases.
  • Do the patient’s psychiatric examination, recognize the psychiatric symptoms and signs of the mental disorders, pre-diagnose with anamnesis and psychiatric examination.
  • Explain the concepts like psychic apparatus and defense mechanisms, the cases that defense mechanisms lead to normal mental state and psychopathology, psychotherapy and its role in therapy.
  • Diagnose and treat the depression, learn prevention principles and conditions for referral to psychiatry clinics.
  • Recognize the common psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, dementia, sexual function disorders, personality disorders, etc.).
  • Recognize and evaluate the emergency psychiatric presentations and make an emergency psychiatric intervention, if necessary.
  • Explain the characteristics of adolescence period and the common pathologies of adolescence.
  • Explain the characteristics of senility period and the common pathologies of senility.
  • Recognize the psychiatric disorders due to the general medical conditions.
  • Explain the forensic psychiatry issues.
  • Explain management strategies about the topics ‘suicide’ and ‘suicide intervention’ describe the referral conditions to psychiatry clinics.
