Atılım University recognizes the importance of water and is committed to ensuring that water use at its campus contributes to good water and environmental stewardship.  The University policy sets out how the University will deliver on these commitments by ensuring that appropriate controls and checks are in place to reduce consumption and the risk of water pollution. The policy will contribute to the SDG by improving water efficiency at the University by reducing consumption and improving our ability to detect water loss.

Policy Implementation

Atılım University implements the policy to promote moral responsibility for reducing water use through efficient practices. The University reduces its consumption of a resource already under considerable pressure by reducing water use and making progress towards the objectives set out in the policy statement will contribute towards meeting this objective through practices that are conducted by the Directorate of Auxiliary Services at Atılım University.

Policy Scope

The scope of the policy is to set out objectives that the University needs to meet to reduce its water use, thereby limiting its consumption of a resource under considerable pressure. The purpose of the policy is to serve as a tool to reduce water consumption at the University and increase awareness of the environmental responsibility of the University in terms of water conservation while reducing our environmental impact. All university members, including staff, students, researchers, tenants, and groups are responsible for the policy.

Policy Statement

Atılım University is committed to efficient water consumption, to be achieved through the implementation of the policy. The goal of the policy is to contribute to the sustainable use of water at the University. The University will manage to minimize potential damage to the University assets and our surrounding environment, while capitalizing on opportunities to reduce our demand from artificial sources.  The effective treatment of water has significant greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change; and in this regard, we are committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, through the effective monitoring of water consumption and implementation of improvement initiatives across our campus.

Policy Objectives

Atılım University is to achieve the SDG no. 6 in the sense of reduction in water and increment in water reuse at the MOG Campus through the following key policy objectives:

  • Monitoring and measuring water consumption and identifying significant and abnormal water use on the campus, and implementing opportunities for improved water efficiency
  • Ensuring that water conservation, reuse, and efficiency are incorporated in design considerations for future refurbishments and developments at the campus
  • Investigating and developing opportunities for rainwater and greywater harvesting based on a whole-life costing approach
  • Integrating a whole-life costings approach in assessing the value for money of building and construction specifications against operational water savings
  • Engaging with our students and staff to inspire them to take action to reduce water consumption and encouraging water-saving behavior
  • Incorporating water efficiency measures into all new and refurbished facilities through best practices in water-efficient design
  • Maintaining all plants and equipment, controlling and managing systems and water infrastructure in a way to maximize efficiency
  • Designing and constructing new facilities, and maintaining existing components and their fixed water infrastructure
  • Undertaking identification, development, and implementation efforts regarding awareness programs to support water conservation measures among university members
  • Confirming and implementing all legal and legislative requirements relating to water use, consumption, and efficiency
  • Identifying areas of significant water use at the University to set appropriate objectives and action plans to reduce water use and water waste
