Histology Project

Subject: Histological preparation and staining

Histology is the microscopic study of animal and plant cell and tissues through staining and sectioning and examining them under a microscope (electron or light microscope). There are various methods used to study tissue characteristics and microscopic structures of the tissue. Histological studies are used in forensic investigations, autopsy, diagnosis and in education. In addition, histology is used extensively in medicine especially in the study of diseased tissues to aid treatment.

In our project, firstly, literatures about the subject will be researched from related databases. Then, tissue process steps such as the tissue fixation, dehydration, paraffin embedding, sectioning and various histochemical staining will be examined through the literatures. Different tissues which were stained by different histochemical stains visualized with the camera.

Cardiovascular Surgery Project: 'Determination of the Incidence of Venous Insufficiency among Healthcare Professionals by Plethysmography'

Participants of the study: Medical school students (max 4). At least one or two must speak Turkish fluently to communicate with volunteers.
Basics of the study: Venous insufficiency of the lower extremities is a common health problem among society. Symptoms may vary from minor skin changes to ulceration of legs. Certain occupational groups are at risk. The aim of the study is to detect venous insufficiency among healthcare professionals to determine the incidence among this high-risk group. Plethysmography is an easy, fast and non-invasive technique for detection of venous insufficiency.

Target population of study: Healthcare professionals at Medicana International Ankara Hospital (target is 100 volunteers).

Methods: The study group must learn basics of circulatory system and venous insufficiency of the lower extremities. Literature search is mandatory. Attendance to Medicana Hospital for meetings and examination of volunteers is mandatory (after lectures of the medical school!).

Steps:

  1. Forming of the study group.
  2. Free study time to search basics of the topic.
  3. First meeting(s) : Decide a communication method within the study group. Discuss about the topic. Learn effective methods and tools for a scientific search. Next steps; Hypothesis, Methods and Planning.
  4. Application to the ethics committee. Ethics procedures from beginning to end.
  5. Examination of volunteers and data collection.
  6. Analysis of collected data.
  7. Last meeting (s): Discussion and conclusion of the study.
  8. Write out a paper!

Nephrology and Internal Medicine Project

Subject: Magnesium

Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis. Low intakes of magnesium induce changes in biochemical pathways that can increase the risk of various diseases. The main focus of this project will be on the relation of magnesium with hypertension, kidney and  cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis,

The projects includes three steps:

  • write a review about magnesium: importance in general health and kidney disease    patients,
  • to prepare a power point presentation about their data
  • to make a report to be published in a Turkish newspaper
